Want to Enter a Cool Contest with me

May 6th, 2009

Alright, im not one to ask for help or even enter into a contest. But a friend of mine in the AM industry is having a contest/raffle and the winner gets a 42" flat screen tv. And the great part about it is, if you sign up under me you enter the contest also, and if you can get people to sign up under you it puts your name into the raffle more times so you have a higher chance of winning. Its super simple to enter, all you have to do is go to this link, @nickycakes Get Your Link and when you get there just get your link and post it on twitter, thats all you have to do to enter into the contest. and then you can advertise your link (just like im doing right now) to other people so it helps you get more entries.

So, Whats up with all this “Swine Flu” talk

May 3rd, 2009

Swine Flu (or Swine influenzavirus (SIV) flu ) refers to a subset of Orthomyxoviridae that creates influenza in pigs and are endemic in pigs. This is not a phylogenetics based taxonomic category.

This is what you will find if you look up "Swine Flu " in Google.  Now that does not make a ton of sense to me because, well I dont have a medical degree.  I want to find out what "Swine Flu " really is, where it started, how it spreads, and what we can do to help prevent it.

Swine influenza (also called swine flu , pigfluenza , hog flu , and pig flu ) Swine influenza is common in pigs in the midwestern United States (and occasionally in other states), Mexico, Canada, South America, Europe (including the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Italy), Kenya, Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan and other parts of eastern Asia.

Transmission from pigs to humans is not common, when a transmission to a human results in influenza its called zoonatic swine flu .  People who work with pigs, especially people with intense exposures, are at risk of catching swine flu . However, only about fifty such transmissions have been recorded since the mid-20th century, when identification of influenza subtypes became possible. (Importantly, eating pork does not pose a risk of infection.)  Rarely, these strains of swine flu can pass from human to human. In humans, the symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of influenza and of influenza like illness in general, namely chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, weakness and general discomfort.

The 2009 flu outbreak in humans that is widely known as "swine flu" is due to an apparently virulent new strain of influenza A virus subtype H1N1 that was produced by reassortment from one strain of human influenza virus, one strain of avian influenza virus, and two separate strains of swine influenza. The origin of this new strain is unknown, and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reports that this strain has not been isolated in pigs.  It passes with apparent ease from human to human, an ability attributed to an as-yet unidentified mutation.  This 2009 H1N1 strain causes the normal symptoms of influenza, such as fever, coughing and headache.

On a side note I found this little advertisement gem. Its pretty funny. Its a one question survey about swine flu. Yeah an ad about swine flu. Check it out! Swine Flu Survey

Cubed Puzzle

January 6th, 2009

Some puzzles are hard. They are puzzles to the power of one. Some puzzles are super hard, and those are puzzles to the power of two (Puzzle Squared). This puzzle game is so difficult, it’s puzzle to the power of three (Puzzle Cubed, or Cubed Electronic Puzzle). Ok, so you can argue the puzzle pieces are also cubes, and that’s why it’s called what it is - but just go with us, mmkay? Because this puzzle really is hard; it’s actually 600 different puzzles in one. Here’s why:

Cubed (for short) is composed of four electronic cubes. Each one is surrounded on four sides by magnetic connectors, and each displays 1/4 of the puzzle on its LCD screen. Now, you just have to figure out how the pieces connect together as you connect the cubes via their magnets. There are even two separate games you can play: you can make pictures and icons by forming a square shape, or you can form words in a rectangular shape. All 600 puzzles are shown in the instruction manual, but when you hear the timer beeping down, there isn’t enough time to cheat. Get ten puzzles solved in a row and you win. Fail and you are (well, we won’t tell anyone…just keep trying until you win)!
