Study Ball
May 18th, 2009
Concentrating on work isn’t always easy, but for a student that would rather be out socializing, it’s close to impossible. Some students are committed enough that they can manage to concentrate on school work and ignore the nagging urge to slam the text book closed and go out. Well this Study Ball which is made to look humorously like a ball and chain can help the not so dedicated students stick to their studying goals.

This isn’t just a timer, it actually shackles to your leg until the set time is up. On the shackle itself it lists how much time you have left, so you can count the minutes down until you’re finally free again. The ball weighs 20.95 pounds, which is possible to move, but still a bit on the difficult side. So if there’s an emergency, you can still pick it up and run. It can’t be set for over 4 hours at a time and they suggest that minors not use this without adult supervision. It runs on 3 AAA batteries and will cost you 85,45€ or about $115.

So, Whats up with all this “Swine Flu” talk
May 3rd, 2009
Swine Flu (or Swine influenzavirus (SIV) flu ) refers to a subset of Orthomyxoviridae that creates influenza in pigs and are endemic in pigs. This is not a phylogenetics based taxonomic category.
This is what you will find if you look up "Swine Flu " in Google. Now that does not make a ton of sense to me because, well I dont have a medical degree. I want to find out what "Swine Flu " really is, where it started, how it spreads, and what we can do to help prevent it.
Swine influenza (also called swine flu , pigfluenza , hog flu , and pig flu ) Swine influenza is common in pigs in the midwestern United States (and occasionally in other states), Mexico, Canada, South America, Europe (including the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Italy), Kenya, Mainland China, Taiwan, Japan and other parts of eastern Asia.
Transmission from pigs to humans is not common, when a transmission to a human results in influenza its called zoonatic swine flu . People who work with pigs, especially people with intense exposures, are at risk of catching swine flu . However, only about fifty such transmissions have been recorded since the mid-20th century, when identification of influenza subtypes became possible. (Importantly, eating pork does not pose a risk of infection.) Rarely, these strains of swine flu can pass from human to human. In humans, the symptoms of swine flu are similar to those of influenza and of influenza like illness in general, namely chills, fever, sore throat, muscle pains, severe headache, coughing, weakness and general discomfort.
The 2009 flu outbreak in humans that is widely known as "swine flu" is due to an apparently virulent new strain of influenza A virus subtype H1N1 that was produced by reassortment from one strain of human influenza virus, one strain of avian influenza virus, and two separate strains of swine influenza. The origin of this new strain is unknown, and the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reports that this strain has not been isolated in pigs. It passes with apparent ease from human to human, an ability attributed to an as-yet unidentified mutation. This 2009 H1N1 strain causes the normal symptoms of influenza, such as fever, coughing and headache.
On a side note I found this little advertisement gem. Its pretty funny. Its a one question survey about swine flu. Yeah an ad about swine flu. Check it out! Swine Flu Survey

Clicking Computer Hand as a Kitchen Grip
January 17th, 2009

There’s no reason to keep all that geekiness directly around your computer. No, you have to branch out into other areas of your home and make sure that all your guests know what a geek you truly are. Then when you’re forced to finally leave your computer, you can feel right at home with your cursor oven mitts. Hopefully, then you won’t start getting the shakes when you’ve left your computer for twenty minutes. After all, it’s better to go through the withdrawals than to forget to eat after days of gaming and drop dead.
If the price on this Clicking Kitchen Grip is actually correct, it’s possible you’ll end up scalding yourself even with these on. Then again it probably doesn’t cost much to construct something this simple. At least I would hope not, considering they have them posted for $1. I’m guessing that’s for one only. Unfortunately these aren’t in stock as of now and they only state that it will be available soon. From the looks of things though, you can go ahead and purchase it now and it will be sent when they have them in stock.

Retro Vending Machine
December 26th, 2008

Everyone has that dream to convert a room into their ultimate hang out or hide out, depending on your outlook. Usually some sort of cool drink dispenser is in the mix. Whether it be for alcohol or other types of drinks, hangouts need beverages. Which is where this retro vending machine comes in handy. It’s a bright and shining red, so it would make a cool addition to any room and would stand out from other appliances.
It will hold up to eighteen regular sized cans, which means you can make the choice of adding in non-alcoholic or alcoholic drinks. Actually, since there are three different slots you could put in both. Just depending on how much you trust the underage people that tend to roam your house. The refrigeration system is 120V and the whole thing is about 15” tall. It is a little pricey, but not horrible. You can pick it up for $159.

Sun Jar
December 19th, 2008

Do not let the strange name and the strange concept of this particularly useful device distract your attention from what the Sun jar solar lamp has to offer. In essence these are jam jars which are able to absorb solar power and automatically switch themselves on and emit light when darkness falls. So how do these Sun jar solar lamp actually work?
These are perhaps the most eco-friendly lamps available on the market at the moment and have an aura and mystery around them which will attract children and grown-ups alike. You simply place the Sun jar solar lamp on a shelf in full view of daylight and it will build up an energy supply using solar technology which will then be converted into a soft candle like glow when darkness falls.
The beauty of the Sun jar solar lamp is the fact that they can be used indoors or outdoors, as lighting for a party, as a bedside lamp or a decoration for a bedroom or main room in the house. Of all the so-called eco-friendly products which we have covered on the site in the past this is perhaps the “greenest” eco-friendly lamp which we have come across and offers something very different to the norm.
